Home Brewing Basics

What Is Home Brewing?

Home brewing is simply the process where any person can make beer in their home from choosing the ingredients to the bottling and consumption of the finished product. In recent decades the laws in the US have been relaxed allowing almost anybody of legal age to create their own beer.

History Of Home Brewing

Beer was originally made thousands of years ago by individual experimentation. In the US, our forefathers produced a myriad of beer and spirits on plantations and farms throughout the country. Home brewing skyrocketed during prohibition where just about anything was tried to create beer since it wasn't commercially available. Some brewing companies, unable to manufacture beer, still sold malt extract. Bakers yeast was often substituted for brewers yeast for home brew recipes and flavor enhancers such as potato peels and raisins were often used. Today, a wide variety of kits and products are available offering the home brewer plenty of options on techniques and recipes.

Why You Should Try Home Brewing

There are several obvious reasons to brew your own beer. One is the cost is far less in the long run provided you have the time to devote to the process. Also, you can create really great tasting beers that cater to your specific tastes.

Laws Regarding Home Brewing

Laws regarding home brewing vary from state-to-state and you should check local laws in your area. We will be working on a searchable database of specific legislation for different states in the coming months.
